Red Cross Prerequisite Swim Test
Apr 21 – Feb 24
All participants must successfully complete the following prerequisite swim test before beginning certification training.
Swim Test Requirements
1. 200-Yard Continuous Swim

Swim 200 yards (8 lengths of a 25-yard pool) without stopping
-
Freestyle (front crawl) or breaststroke may be used
-
Switching between strokes is permitted
2. 2-Minute Hands-Free Tread
-
Immediately following the 200-yard swim
-
Tread water for 2 minutes without using hands
3. 100-Yard Swim
-
After completing the tread
-
Swim 100 yards (4 lengths of a 25-yard pool)
-
Freestyle or breaststroke allowed
Timed Brick Retrieval (Simulated Rescue)
This portion simulates a real-world rescue scenario.

Swim 20 yards using freestyle or breaststroke
-
Perform a surface dive to the bottom of the pool (approximately 8 feet deep)
-
Retrieve a 10-pound brick
-
Swim back to the starting point holding the brick with both hands

Keep your face above water during the return swim
-
Exit the water without using a ladder or steps
โฑ Time Requirement:

Must be completed within 1 minute and 40 seconds
Certification Requirements
To complete certification, participants must:

Pass the prerequisite swim test

Complete all required online training (30+ hours) prior to the first day of class

Attend all scheduled water skills training sessions
